The US Open champion said on his Facebook page: “After many consultations with my doctors and my team, unfortunately I have decided to skip Canada and Cincinnati to be on the safe side – even though I've been battling hard to make these events.”

The 32-year-old, who suffered a surprise first round round defeat to Daniil Medvedev at Wimbledon, admits it’s a blow to miss the next two events but he will not return until he is fully fit.

“It’s hugely disappointing for me and my fans that I have had to make this decision,” said the world No.4. “I need to be 100 per-cent confident – before I resume competition – that the injury that plagued me in Wimbledon has been resolved. My team and I are doing everything possible to make this a speedy recovery.”

Wawrinka may be missing in Canada, but another Swiss will be participating. Roger Federer confirmed yesterday that he will make a rare appearance at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, which begins on Monday.
