The 16th-ranked Wawrinka outlasted the Chilean 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 in more than two hours and he will now meet Davis Cup team-mate Federer in Saturday’s final.

Federer won through to the decider of the eight-man invitational event yesterday with a 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-5) victory over Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.

The Swiss pair, who teamed up to win the doubles gold medal at the Beijing Olympics, have met only twice with Federer winning both times, the last in Dubai in 2006.

Federer will take on Italian Andreas Seppi in the opening round of the Australian Open, while Wawrinka faces Ivo Minar from the Czech Republic.
