The British number one ranked girl from Guernsey, seeded 11th, won 6-3 6-2 in just 64 minutes to set up a third-round meeting with Germany’s Annika Beck.

Watson, 17, will play Beck on Friday, following former Wimbledon junior champion Laura Robson onto court eight.

Robson, 15, will take on 12th seed Tamaryn Hendler of Belgium.

Stephanie Cornish’s US Open has come to an end, however, after she and Katerina Pallivets of Canada were beaten in a super tie-break by Slovakian pair Jana Cepelova and Chantal Skamlova 6-4 0-6 [10-5].

There were also defeats in the boys’ doubles for Leicestershire’s Ahmed El Menshawy – beaten 6-4 7-5 alongside American Harry Fowler by US duo Matthew Kandath and Jack Sock – and Ireland’s John Morrisey, the Dubliner and Indian team-mate Sudanwa Sitaram going out 6-4 3-6 [10-4] to Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics and Cheng Peng Hsieh of Taipei.
