The 17-year-old from Guernsey won the US Open junior girls title last September, but bowed out to China’s Hao Chen Tang 6-1 4-6 6-1 at the first hurdle in Melbourne.

In the junior boys’ draw Jack Carpenter was also a first-round loser as he fell to 10th-seeded Brazilian Guilherme Clezer 6-2 6-4.

Oliver Golding provided the only win for Britain’s juniors when the 16-year-old defeated Japan’s Yasutaka Uchiyama 6-4 6-4.

Meanwhile, Irish youngster Sam Barry replicated Louk Sorensen’s first-round win in the men’s draw when he beat Russian Victor Baluda 6-7 (7/4) 6-4 6-3.

Sorensen became the first Irishman to win a match at a grand slam in the Open era earlier this week when he beat Yen-Hsun Lu.

Another Irishman, John Morrissey lost his opening match 6-1 6-1 to eighth seed Dominic Schulz.
