WATCH: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina blasts his way to multiple ATP milestones

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is into his first ever Masters 1000 semi-final after completing an impressive turnaround against Indian Wells champion Taylor Fritz.

After becoming the first American quarter-finalist in Monte Carlo since 2008, Fritz was looking to end a longer drought of 19 years to become the first US semi-finalist since 2003.

But Davidovich Fokina had other ideas, rallying from behind with some powerful tennis to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 after close to three hours on court.

He said in his post-match interview: “I’m so so so happy!

“Last year I reached the quarter-finals and I retired [in that match]

“The emotions to be in the semi-finals are super high!”

As mentioned, Davidovich Fokina’s previous best showing at Masters 1000 level came in Monte Carlo last year when he retired against Stefanos Tsitsipas who went on to claim his maiden Masters trophy that week,

This week in Monte Carlo has signalled a welcome shift in form for the 22-year-old Spaniard as he has won more than two successive matches for the first time since Roland Garros in June last year.

His last ATP semi-final came in May 2021 at the 250 level Estoril Open, losing to compatriot and eventual champion Albert Ramos-Vinolas that day.

It also bumps Davidovich Fokina up to a new career-high of at least 32nd in the ATP rankings, with a foray into the top 20 a possibility should he win the tournament.
