The fourth-seeded Spaniard was upset, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, by Austria’s Patricia Mayr in the second round.
Llagostera Vives was the defending champion of this red clay event – having come out of qualifying a year ago to claim her second career title – and had won her last nine matches at this venue.
The 28-year-old, who has just four main draw victories since June, had trouble finding her serve against Mayr, committing eight doubles faults and winning just 56 percent (22-of-39) first serve points.
Mayr will be attempting to reach her first WTA semi-final when she faces Ioana Raluca Olaru in the round of eight.
The only other seeded player in action Wednesday was number five Klara Zakopalova, who endured a similar fate as unseeded Romanian Edina Gallovits handed her a 6-3, 6-4 defeat.
A native of the Czech Republic, Zakopalova’s loss was not exactly a shock – Gallovits has won the last four meetings and is ranked 67th, 27 places better than her seeded opponent.
Gallovits’ quarter-final foe is Slovenia’s Masa Zec Peskiric, who continued her run of success with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Czech Petra Cetkovska.
Zec Peskiric shook up the draw on Tuesday by ousting top-seeded Flavia Pennetta.
