Victoria Mboko’s stunning start to life on the WTA Tour has continued, with her run in Qatar just the latest in a long line of successes.
The Canadian’s stock rose sharply when she won her maiden WTA 1000 event last year, but admittedly, she had started her rapid rise up the rankings long before that.
Now, after a run to the fourth round in Melbourne last month, Victoria Mboko has played in all four Grand Slam tournaments and established herself as a mainstay at the elite level.
To further reinforce this notion, the 18-year-old has just ticked off a huge milestone, and she reacted to the news that she was now a top ten player in a recent press conference.
Victoria Mboko reacts to breaking into the WTA top ten
Actually speaking before she lost in the Qatar Open final to Karolina Muchova, Mboko’s opinions on this matter will not have changed even if she came so close to another WTA 1000-level title.
She first admitted: “Yeah, it’s kind of crazy. I never expected something to happen so fast for me. Yeah, I just have been taking it day by day, tournament by tournament. Every tournament I enter, I want to do well. I don’t really, I don’t hold that much expectation of myself. It’s not like when I enter a tournament, I’m going to say I’m going to win it, but you always want to try your best.
Who has impressed you the most?
“I think this came relatively fast, but it’s a nice feeling. It’s nice to see that, to have that milestone, to see that number. So, yeah, I’m pretty happy with that.”
Then asked what her next goal might be, and if reaching the top five is in her sights, Mboko admitted: “Not really.
“I don’t really set goals for myself, just because I just like to surprise myself along the way. You never know what’s going to happen in tennis. You can have high moments, you can also have low moments.
“I think just being positive with myself, with whatever happens, it’s all a part of the process. As long as I’m having fun doing what I love, it’s going to pay off at the end of the day and, who knows, maybe good things may come my way in the future.”
Mboko and Mirra Andreeva have actually broken a 17-year tennis record with their recent successes.
Victoria Mboko’s rapid rise up the WTA rankings
In January of 2025, Mboko was ranked 333rd in the world, and remained unknown to most.
Now, she is a top ten player and regarded as one of the best young talents that the sport currently boasts.
This rise has been meteoric, cultivated over a stunning year of consistency and incredible highs. Given how she’s started the 2026 season, she seems poised to only continue rising.
That being said, it took her until June before she could call herself a top 100 player, and she enjoyed the biggest boost of her career to date in July when she won the Canadian Open.
Do you think women should play best-of-five set matches?
In one of the most remarkable tennis results in recent memory, this teenage sensation soared to the title, thus propelling herself into the top 30.
And now, with another WTA 1000 final, following on from her fourth-round run at the Australian Open, Mboko is a top 10 superstar.
