Victoria Mboko confirmed her place in the Qatar Open final after comprehensively defeating Jelena Ostapenko.

Mboko has made Qatar Open history on her way to the final, where she has picked up victories against Elena Rybakina, Mirra Andreeva, and Vera Zvonareva.

The Canadian has already picked up 13 victories this season in her first four tournaments, which is more than anyone else on the WTA Tour.

Along with Andreeva, Mboko has broken a 17-year WTA streak that was last achieved by Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka.

Mboko’s final appearance at the Qatar Open has ensured the Canadian will now enter the top 10 of the rankings for the first time.

The teenager has already collected 640 points at the event, which has helped her displace Ekaterina Alexandrova, Belinda Bencic, and her Qatar Open final opponent, Karolina Muchova.

Mboko joins fellow teenager Andreeva in the top 10 of the rankings, which is a feat that hasn’t been achieved since 2009.

The last time two teenagers occupied positions in the top 10 of the WTA rankings, Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka were at the top of the game.

Mboko and Andreeva are following in very fine footsteps, as both Azarenka and Wozniacki went on to lift Grand Slams.

Azarenka won the Australian Open in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013, while Wozniacki won the same tournament in 2018.

Victoria Mboko’s improbable rise up the WTA Tour rankings

Mboko cracking the top 10 is a remarkable feat for the 19-year-old, particularly due to where she was ranked this time last year.

The Canadian started the 2025 season ranked at World No. 333 and last February she was not even in the top 200.

Her ranking flourished in the early months of 2025, when she won 22 successive matches without dropping a set on the ITF Tour.

She made her top 100 debut in June 2025 and her ranking soared to World No. 24 after her incredible home victory at the Canadian Open.

A title in Hong Kong, a final appearance at the Adelaide International, and the round of 16 at the Australian Open ensured Mboko continued to climb the rankings.

The star’s final appearance at the Qatar Open might have helped her reach the top 10, but there is every chance the climb can continue in 2026.
