The Spaniard was solid in windy conditions, while Tsonga’s long list of unforced errors let the Frenchman down when it mattered most.

The win is a boost for Verdasco’s Open chances after his golden run at last year’s tournament ended when he bowed out in the semi-finals to countryman and eventual winner, Rafael Nadal.
