UTS Guadalajara kicks off 2025 season with high-stakes action
The innovative tennis format of the UTS returns with a global tour, starting in Mexico.
The Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) is back for 2025, launching its season with UTS Guadalajara from February 14-16 at the Centro Panamericano de Tenis. This marks UTS’s debut in Latin America and the first of four events scheduled for the year, bringing together rising stars and seasoned veterans in a unique, fast-paced format.
UTS Guadalajara will feature an eight-player field, including Casper Ruud, fresh off his ATP 500 Dallas Open final appearance, alongside Tomas Machac, David Goffin, Flavio Cobolli, Jakob Mensik, Adrian Mannarino, Fabio Fognini, and fan favorite Richard Gasquet, who is nearing the end of his career. With a prize pool nearing $1.4 million and a potential winner’s paycheck of $421,000, the competition promises high-intensity battles.
The event also marks the start of the UTS Race Ranking, a season-long points system determining who qualifies for the Grand Final in December. Every match matters, making each event a crucial stepping stone for players aiming for the season-ending championship.
Following Guadalajara, UTS will move to Europe for Bastide Médical UTS Nîmes on April 4-5, set in the historic Arènes de Nîmes, a Roman amphitheater dating back to 100 AD. The event is already drawing significant interest, with multiple sessions selling out in advance. The confirmed lineup includes Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz, Alex De Minaur, Holger Rune, Gael Monfils, Ugo Humbert, and Ruud, with one more player yet to be announced.
What makes UTS Different?
Founded by Patrick Mouratoglou, UTS is designed to revolutionize traditional tennis with a fan-friendly format that includes:
-Four eight-minute quarters instead of traditional sets
-Faster pace with just 15 seconds between points
-No second serves to encourage aggressive play
-Unlimited coaching from the sidelines
-In-match player interviews between quarters
-Strategic bonus cards that players can use to shift momentum
UTS embraces a fresh approach to professional tennis, prioritizing entertainment without sacrificing high-level competition. With its unique rules and intense format, the 2025 season is set to deliver another year of must-watch tennis.
Inside the Baseline…
UTS pushes the boundaries of traditional tennis, adapting the sport to fit a faster-paced, entertainment-driven world. The shorter format, on-court coaching, and unique rules may not appeal to everyone, but they bring a new level of energy and unpredictability. While some purists may resist the changes, the growing interest in UTS suggests there’s room for innovation alongside tradition.
