US Open Social Slice: Novak Djokovic praises Holger Rune; Dane and his IKEA bag
On today’s Social Slice, Novak Djokovic praises his 18-year-old opponent Holger Rune, who surprisingly entered centre court rocking an IKEA bag.
Firstly, the world number one voiced his admiration for Rune after defeating the Next Gen star in four sets on day two.
Djokovic took to social media after the contest, and was confident we would see the 18-year-old back at the US Open very soon.
Much respect to Holger. We’ll see you back here again my friend I’m sure of it 🤝 @usopen #USOpen

On the topic of Holger Rune, his choice of kitbag certainly got fans talking after bringing an IKEA bag onto court in what is surely a tennis first.
The 18-year-old was clearly showing his Scandinavian roots!

Three-time US Open champion Kim Clijsters evidently liked it too…

After the contest, Djokovic admitted that the second set was not an ‘ideal atmosphere’ after he thought the crowd were booing him.
In fact, the US Open faithful were saying ‘Ruuuune’ in support of the heavy underdog, who was mightily impressive in the second set.
Djokovic said he had thought the crowd was booing, not saying “Ruuuuuuune” during that second set.

Djokovic wasn’t the only one to make the mistake. American star Madison Keys thought the same.
I was confused and thought they were booing too. They’re chanting “Rune” #USOpen

Ernesto Escobedo was involved in a hugely entertaining match point after the American was seen flipping over the net!
Despite losing the point, the 25-year-old did go on to win.
