Tomas Machac breaks into Top 20 with first title in Acapulco
Czech player Tomas Machac claims his first ATP title at the Mexican Open, defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets.
Tomas Machac achieved a significant career milestone by capturing his first ATP title at the Mexican Open in Acapulco. The 24-year-old Czech defeated Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6(6), 6-2 in the final, showcasing resilience and skill.
Throughout the tournament, Machac demonstrated exceptional form, notably edging out Brandon Nakashima with a late third-set break in the semifinals. This victory propels Machac into the ATP Top 20 for the first time in his career, marking a significant ascent in the rankings.
Machac’s journey to this point has been marked by perseverance and notable performances. He previously secured a gold medal in mixed doubles at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, representing the Czech Republic.
Additionally, he recorded impressive victories over top-ranked players, including a win against World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in Geneva and a triumph over World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in Shanghai.
With this title, Machac becomes the third Czech player to win an ATP 500 crown, following in the footsteps of Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek. His success in Acapulco not only adds a prestigious title to his resume but also solidifies his status as a rising star in the tennis world.
Inside the Baseline…
There’s something special about watching a player break through for their first title. The raw emotion and the disbelief turning into sheer joy are reminders of everything we love about this sport: the grind, the setbacks, the silent belief that eventually, the moment will come. Machac has been knocking on the door, and now, with this win, he’s kicked it wide open. Once a player gets that taste of winning, the hunger only grows.
