Tim Henman backs Jannik Sinner resilience amid doping scandal

Jannik Sinner may have successfully defended his Australian Open title, but his triumph in Melbourne came under the weight of ongoing doping allegations, which is a situation that former British No.1 Tim Henman says highlights the need for quicker resolutions in tennis.

Speaking on The Sports Agents podcast, Henman praised the world No.1’s ability to block out the off-court noise and deliver his best tennis, calling it a display of “amazing mental resilience.” Despite the uncertainty surrounding his case, Jannik Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev in the final, cementing his place at the top of the men’s game. “He is clearly the best player in the world right now, but we need this dark cloud cleared up,” Henman said, referencing the Court of Arbitration for Sport hearing set for April.

While Henman acknowledged that doping cases are never a good look for the sport, he defended Sinner, insisting that tennis’ rigorous drug testing makes intentional doping unlikely. “I think drug testing in tennis is extremely diligent. They are tested all the time. And for me, I don’t think in any way, shape, or form that any of these athletes were trying to cheat,” he said. “I think they are extraordinary cases. But it does highlight if there’s something illegal in your body, you’re going to get caught.”

Former British No.1 Laura Robson also weighed in on the controversy, pointing out that Sinner had complied fully with the necessary procedures. “He was able to present evidence within 48 hours, which a lot of people aren’t,” Robson noted. “He’d done everything that was asked of him.”

As tennis fans wait for clarity on Sinner’s situation, Henman emphasized that his ability to perform under such pressure is a testament to his mental fortitude. “It’s amazing that he has shown such resilience mentally,” he said. “But, you know, for tennis fans and for all of us, I think we want to get the conclusion, and hopefully that will be in April.”

With a Grand Slam title on the line and a cloud of controversy hanging over him, he didn’t flinch—he delivered. Whether or not the allegations amount to anything, the way he’s handled the pressure, the scrutiny, and the weight of expectations speaks volumes. In a sport where mental toughness separates the great from the good, Sinner is proving he belongs at the very top.
