Dominic Thiem slide at US Open

Thiem hailed by tearful Zverev after US Open epic: ‘The first of many Grad Slam titles for him’

Alexander Zverev has paid tribute to friend Dominic Thiem after the Austrian edged an epic battle between the two to win the US Open.

Zverev looked to have the title on his racket when he was two sets and break up in the third, and he even served for the match in the decider.

However, it was Thiem who finally came out on top in a deciding set tiebreaker, leaving Zverev emotional on court.

“I don’t know where to start,” he said when asked for some words.

“I’d like to congratulate Dominic on the first of many Grand Slam titles.

“It was a tough battle – I wish you would have missed a little more.”

Quickly, Zverev turned tearful, struggling to articulate his emotions after what was the most gruelling of contests.

“Here I am giving a runner-up speech. Thanks to my team for sticking with me – the last two years have not been easy – hopefully one day we will lift this trophy.

“I want to thank my parents. I wish one day I can bring the trophy home.”
