The unheralded American ATP player who has a better record in tiebreaks than Jannik Sinner over the past year

A player ranked outside the top 40 has the best tiebreak record on the ATP Tour over the last 12 months.

This American ATP star, who has never made it past the third round at a Grand Slam, has shown remarkable composure in the nerviest of moments.

Remarkably, this player has never reached the ATP top 30, despite his record in tiebreaks, and has recently failed to impress during his uninspiring North American hard-court swing.

However, his recent form has not stopped him from beating out the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Tiebreaks represent the measure of a player’s ability to thrive under pressure, and this player certainly does that.

Marcos Giron has the best tiebreak record on the ATP Tour over the past year

As per the ATP Win/Loss Index, world number 50 Marcos Giron has beaten out Jannik Sinner for the best tiebreak record on the ATP Tour over the last year.

Giron, who turned professional in 2014, has won 18 tiebreaks of his 23 tiebreak sets in the last year. This has resulted in a winning percentage of 78.3 per cent on tiebreaks.

World number two Jannik Sinner – who recently lost the US Open final to Carlos Alcaraz – sits in second place, with a record of 17-5 and a winning percentage of 77.3 per cent.

Remarkably, world number one Alcaraz is behind the likes of Luciano Darderi and Hamad Medjedovic.

The Spanish juggernaut sits in ninth place with a tiebreak record of 19-11 over the last year: a winning percentage of 63.3 per cent.

Perhaps the most surprising factor is Novak Djokovic, who sits in 50th place on the list.

The Serbian 24-time Grand Slam winner has suffered an unusually poor run of form during tiebreaks recently, going 11-15 across the past 12 months.

PlayerPercentage of tiebreaks won over the last yearRecord
Marcos Giron78.318-5
Jannik Sinner77.317-5
Luciano Darderi71.415-6

As for Giron, his tiebreak record has not prevented an extremely disappointing run of form since Wimbledon. The 32-year-old struggled on the North American hard courts, winning just one match in six.

Marcos Giron’s last tiebreak victory came at Wimbledon

You have to go back over two months to find Marcos Giron’s last tiebreak victory. The American last won a tiebreak set in a singles match in the Wimbledon first round.

During the match, Giron won two tiebreak sets, defeating Camilo Ugo Carabelli 7-6, 7-6, 6-3.

The American then lost in the second round to 15th seed Jakub Mensik, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-7.

Since Wimbledon, Giron has struggled, losing in the first round in Washington, Toronto, Cincinnati and Winston-Salem.

The American picked up his first singles win for nearly two months after defeating Mariano Navone in the US Open first round.

He then exited the tournament in the second round, losing to Daniil Medvedev’s conqueror, Benjamin Bonzi.
