‘The stupidest thing ever’ – Nick Kyrgios ‘brutally honest’ on Wimbledon convention

Nick Kyrgios has railed against the men’s doubles format of Wimbledon.

The world number 45 has enjoyed some amazing experiences over the years at Wimbledon.

From defeating Rafael Nadal in his first Wimbledon main draw in 2014 to playing mixed doubles alongside a legend like Venus Williams last summer.

But one draw category, the men’s doubles, has not seen Kyrgios in competition at SW19, and the Aussie has his reasons for that.

“To be honest, I’m not really looking forward to playing best-of-five set doubles,” he told Tennishead when asked about playing the doubles draw.

“I think it’s the stupidest thing ever, to be brutally honest.

“No one wants to play best-of-five sets doubles.

“No one wants to watch best-of-five sets doubles.”

The grass Slam is the only remaining Major to be played over best-of-five sets in men’s doubles.

Kyrgios has entered the men’s doubles draw at Wimbledon for the first time this year alongside good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis.

The pair, who famously won the men’s doubles at their home Slam the Australian Open in January, are entered as the 10th seeds.

So, while Kyrgios is looking forward to teaming up again with his compatriot, he still has his reservations.

He continued: “I’m excited, but I’m also dreading the fact that if it’s one set all, I’m going to have to be playing three more sets of doubles.

“That’s why I haven’t played it before.

“It doesn’t make sense.

“I’ve always gone pretty well here in singles, so I’m not going to on my off day play potentially five sets of doubles.”

Kyrgios faces British wildcard Paul Jubb in the first round of the singles, with Kokkinakis backing his friend to go deep in the draw this year.
