The advice that Andre Agassi gave Nick Kyrgios in 2018 which he has still not followed

Nick Kyrgios was one of the most promising stars in tennis when he burst on the scene in 2012.

The star reached the Wimbledon final in 2022 and won the Australian Open doubles alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis, but injuries have plagued his last few years.

Kyrgios has only won one ATP Tour match in 2025 as he continues to struggle with a multitude of injuries.

The Australian is a maverick, on and off the court, but American legend Andre Agassi offered up his advice to the star in 2018.

Andre Agassi said Nick Kyrgios needs a coach back in 2018

Agassi urged Kyrgios to get himself a coach in 2018, after the star had spent a year without any guidance on the ATP Tour.

Speaking to the Melbourne Age, the American icon said: “I would imagine that there would be a lot of people who would take a great deal of pride in coaching him just based on his talent alone.

“If I was him, I would sit down in a room somewhere and put some deep thought into whom might bring to the table something that I may feel I need that I don’t have. I always surround myself by knowing my weaknesses and filling those gaps.

“You do it in business, you do it in life, and doing it on the tennis court, I would highly suggest that to anybody.”

Kyrgios did not listen to Agassi’s advice and still operates in tennis without a coach. The star has previously worked with Sebastian Grosjean and Lleyton Hewitt.

Why Nick Kyrgios continues to play without a coach

Kyrgios is very unlikely to heed Agassi’s advice now, having explained why he doesn’t hire a new coach back in 2020.

Speaking on Elliot Loney’s podcast, the Australian said: “Personally, I think (hiring a coach) is a little bit of a waste of money ’cause I think they get paid way too much.

“Where I’m at my career now, it’s just too far gone, I think for a coach, ’cause I’m too set in my ways and I just don’t like to listen to advice, to be honest.”

Kyrgios’ next tennis appearances are at exhibition events, World Tennis League and Battle of the Sexes, the latter of which will see him play Aryna Sabalenka on December 28.
