tennishead magazine: October issue out NOW!

Originally published on 02/10/14

Serena Williams graces the cover of the October 2014 issue of tennishead as we celebrate her 18th – Grand Slam victory that is. Having drawn level with Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, the 33-year-old now has her sights on Steffi Graf’s record of 22 majors – can she become the most decorated female player in history?

Kei Nishikori may have fallen at the final hurdle at Flushing Meadows, but as two-time Grand Slam champion Li Na hangs up her racket, we take a closer look at the Asian tennis boom, as well as the tragic tale of Jiro Satoh, a pioneer for Japanese tennis.

Paul Newman sits down with Milos Raonic and finds out more about the dynamics of the Canadian’s multilingual team, with Croatian Ivan Ljubicic and Italian Riccardo Piatti sharing the coaching duties.

Raonic is one of a growing number of players with a big team behind them, with Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Nishikori all enjoying the benefits of two coaches. As part of the adidas player development programme, Mats Merkel knows what it’s like to work as part of a team, and he gives his view of the benefits of multiple coaches, and shares his experience of working with the likes of Caroline Wozniacki and Dominic Thiem.

At the end of the season, while her rivals will be enjoying a well-earned holiday, Caroline Wozniacki will be running the New York marathon. The exhausting training schedule seems to have done Wozniacki’s tennis no harm, we take a closer look at the science behind marathon running and how Wozniacki has been able to clock up the miles while still staying fresh for her matches.

Tommy Robredo is our Locker Room guest while in our regular Hot Stuff feature it is the turn of Croatia’s Ana Konjuh, who at the age of 16 was the youngest player to reach the third round at Wimbledon in 15 years.

Milos Raonic’s compression sleeve might be more superstition than science, but our gear editor Michael Beattie believes there is more to the Canadian’s snazzy sleeve than meets the eye.

In our packed gear section we also pick out the hottest new products on the market, while we chat to Alexandr Dolgopolov about his trusty Wilson Pro Staff.

If that’s not all, we’ve got all the results and rankings from the WTA and ATP, fantastic images from Flushing Meadows, plus the chance to win the official Wimbledon book.
