Jannik Sinner will play Jenson Brooksby in the third round of Wimbledon.

The world number one defeated Miomir Kecmanovic and Nuno Borges to reach the third round, where he will meet Brooksby, who beat Aleksandar Vukic and Ignacio Buse in his opening two matches at Wimbledon.

Brooksby will begin the match as the underdog, although Sinner won’t want to underestimate the world number 81.

Former Grand Slam finalist Taylor Fritz has now shared how Brooksby might trouble Sinner at Wimbledon.

Taylor Fritz believes Jenson Brooksby can make it ‘interesting’ against Jannik Sinner if he deals with his pace

During his latest post-match press conference, Fritz was asked for his thoughts on Brooksby’s game and if he felt it could hurt Sinner.

“He’s a very, like, unorthodox player obviously,” said Fritz.

“I mean, I’m thinking about all the times we played last year.

“Honestly, the one in Tokyo, I was really impressed with just, like, his level. I felt like he was doing an unbelievable job of handling my pace.

“I was striking the ball really well, which is something that he’s going to see against [Jannik] Sinner, just like big ball striking.

“I think if he handles it the way he was dealing with what I was doing in Tokyo, then I think from the ground it will actually be interesting.

“We’ll have to see.

“I don’t know how much the grass is helping his serve, but I think that’s going to be where the match is won or lost.

“Jannik has improved his serve so much over the last couple of years. He’s a very, very good server. Now it’s going to be tough to break him.

“I think he’s going to be able to get a lot more returns in play.”

Sinner and Brooksby have met once before, in Washington, five years ago.

The Italian won on that occasion, 7-6, 6-1, although a lot has changed since then.

Sinner was ranked 24th in the world when they met for the first time and hadn’t won a title above the ATP 250 level.

Fast forward five years and Sinner has held the world number one ranking for 78 weeks, won four Grand Slams and 10 Masters 1000 titles.

Brooksby has had a far trickier time and even spent a year suspended from tennis after being judged to have committed an anti-doping violation.

But even though Brooksby hasn’t developed into a top-10 player, he still has the game to challenge the very best.

When he’s on, he’s dangerous, and Sinner won’t be taking the 25-year-old lightly.

Sinner and Brooksby will contest their third-round match on Friday, July 3.

Taylor Fritz wins again at Wimbledon to keep title hopes alive

Fritz was happy to talk about Sinner and Brooksby’s upcoming third-round tie, having won his match relatively comfortably on Court 2.

After beating Dusan Lajovic in the first round, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, Fritz defeated Patrick Kypson, 6-2, 6-2, 7-5.

Heading into the third round, last year’s semi-finalist looks like a genuine Wimbledon contender, and it will take something special to stop him.

His draw has already opened up nicely, with the fourth seed, Ben Shelton, exiting the tournament in round one.

The biggest obstacle in Fritz’s path to the final is the newly crowned French Open champion, Alexander Zverev.

However, although Zverev is the second seed, Fritz would be the favourite for that potential quarter-final match-up, not only because he’s the better grass-court player, but because he has won each of their last seven encounters.

The American must win his next two matches before he gets to Zverev, though, so he won’t want to get ahead of himself.

Fritz will play Lorenzo Sonego in the third round on Saturday, July 4, and would meet one of Frances Tiafoe, Jan Choinski, Alexander Bublik, or Kyrian Jacquet, should he advance to the last 16.
