Ben Shelton lost to Otto Virtanen, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 2-6, 6-7, in the first round of Wimbledon.

The fourth seed led by two sets to one and then established an 8-5 lead in the deciding-set tiebreak, but couldn’t finish the job on either occasion, as he lost in the first round of a Grand Slam for the first time since the 2023 French Open.

Despite winning three titles this year, Shelton has struggled at the bigger events, winning just six matches across the seven Grand Slam and Masters 1000 events he’s played.

During his post-match press conference, a disappointed Shelton was happy to give credit to his Finnish opponent.

“Yeah, tough loss. One of the toughest losses I’ve taken, for sure,” he said.

“Yeah, I got to give a lot of credit to the guy I played, Otto [Virtanen]. I thought he played an outstanding match.

“I feel like it was an uphill battle all day today. I was pretty off on my serve spot, so I wasn’t getting many free points.

“I was having to grind through a lot of the games. The guy was playing really good and downhill from the baseline.

“Obviously, in the second, I was able to get an early break and tough out the third.

“I think I had 15-40 three separate times in the fifth set. The guy came up with some ridiculous stuff in those moments, really good tennis. Sometimes it happens like that.”

Shelton was then asked what he plans to do next after losing in the first round of Wimbledon.

“I’m usually the type of person that gets back on the court or in the gym the next day,” he said.

“This is definitely one of the toughest losses of my career, coming here at Wimbledon. First time I’ve lost in the first round here.

“I came in playing really good tennis. I didn’t even think I played a poor match today. Things just didn’t go my way.

“But I’m going to treat this as any other tournament that finishes, and I’ll be right back on the practice courts in a couple days.”

Shelton continued, commenting on his poor record at ‘big’ tournaments this year.

“I’m not exactly sure what it’s been this year. Obviously, it’s been a complete roller coaster, doing well at big tournaments, obviously quarter-finals of Australia at the beginning of the year, winning three titles, two of them being [ATP] 500s. Everything else in between, I felt, has been pretty poor,” he said.

“Hasn’t been a great year for me. It’s been a tough year. I’ve had a lot of really tight matches, deciding set tiebreakers, and deciding sets that I’ve lost.

“I think that sometimes these things can happen. I think this year it’s happened a lot more for me than I would like.

“Tennis is a game where it usually only takes one to get you back on the right track.”

Shelton will be back to it before long, as he looks to move past such a devastating defeat.

What is next for Ben Shelton after shocking Wimbledon defeat?

The 23-year-old likely planned to stay in London for a lot longer, but will now turn his attention to the North American hard-court swing.

There, he will defend a Masters 1000 title for the first time in his career.

Shelton won the Canadian Open 12 months ago, defeating Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the final.

He will return in 2026 having won just one Masters 1000 match all season.

If he fails to add to that tally, he will drop 1,000 ranking points, putting him at risk of a top-10 exit.

Perhaps Shelton will choose to return to ATP Tour action before the Canadian Open, in a bid to relieve some of the pressure by the time he arrives in Montreal.

He could potentially attend the Washington Open ATP 500 event, which begins on Saturday, July 25.
