Stosur through to US Open final

Sam Stosur today defeated Angelique Kerber 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to book her place in her first US Open Final.

Considering that Stosur does not have a great record against lefties in Grand Slams, she was defeated by Petra Kvitova in the third round of the Aussie Open and Melinda Czink in the first round of Wimbledon, she will be delighted with her result today.

It was not all plain sailing though with Stosur taking the first set in 31 minutes, before the German took the second to level the match. And although Stosur raced to a 5-0 lead in the final set it took three more games for the Aussie to wrap up the match.

In so doing, Stosur becomes only the fifth Australian woman in the Open Era to reach a US Open Final after Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Kerry Reid and Wendy Turnbull.

Win or lose in the final on Sunday, Stosur will rise to World No.7 when the rankings are next released.

She will face the winner of Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams in Sunday’s final.
