Spanish hopes of retaining Davis Cup in tatters after star withdraws
Reigning Champions Spain will have to defend their 2019 Davis Cup title without their most in form player after COVID strikes
Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from Spain’s 2021 Davis Cup team after testing positive for coronavirus and will take no part in this weeks tournament in Madrid.
Alcaraz had tested negative when the team first met up but a few days later he started feeling mild symptoms and another test gave him the worst possbile news
Alcaraz shared the information on his Twitter page saying “I was very excited to represent my country in Madrid but sometimes things don’t happen as one wants. It is a very hard stick but you will have to get up in the face of this situation and come out strengthened”
Spain’s team is also aiming to complete a historic double without their greatest all time player Rafa Nadal who is still recuperating from a foot injury that has kept him out of competition since Wimbledon.
Spain already have a tough task as they face favourites Russia in the Davis Cup group stage. The Russian team is riding a high this year thanks to the outstanding form of their star players including Daniil Medvedev, Aslan Karatsev and Andrey Rublev.
