The 24-year-old native of Sweden – the world number 34 – Soderling fired 14 aces and saved all four break points he faced against Qureshi, needing 66 minutes to claim the victory.

Seeking his third career title after winning the championship at Rotterdam in February, Soderling will next face Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili, who forged a 6-4 6-3 triumph over Germany’s Michael Berrer.

German qualifier Simon Stadler also advanced to the second round with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over France’s Julien Benneteau.

Stadler’s compatriot, Benjamin Becker was not as lucky. Becker was ousted by Czech qualifier Lukas Dlouhy 6-4 7-6 (7/4) during their opening-round match.
