US Open Social Slice: Novak Djokovic keeps dream alive; Wimbledon throwback

On today’s Social Slice, Novak Djokovic keeps his Calendar Slam dreams alive and a Wimbledon throwback as Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez meet once again.

The world number one is still on track to become the first player since Rod Laver in 1969 to complete the Calendar Slam.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion battled back from a set down to win in five sets against familiar foe Alexander Zverev, who ended his Olympic hopes last month.

The match between Djokovic and Zverev has been labelled as one of the matches of the year, up there with the Serbian’s crunch clash against Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros.

The German and the world number one were engaged in some mesmerising rallies, including a remarkable 53 shot rally for Zverev to keep the third set alive.

The German star suffered US Open heartbreak for a second successive year after losing to Dominic Thiem in the final 12 months ago, where he came within just two points of his maiden Slam.

Despite yet another disappointment for Zverev, 2003 US Open champion Andy Roddick ‘has never been more convinced’ that the German will win a Grand Slam.

Lastly, Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez are set to battle it out in an intriguing women’s final on Saturday night.

The young stars will face off in the first all-teen US Open final since 17-year-old Serena Williams overcame 18-year-old Martina Hingis in 1999.

Over three years ago, a modest crowd on Court 17 witnessed Raducanu defeat Fernandez in straight sets in a Junior Wimbledon match… who would’ve known.
