The 21-year-old Zverev – who was born in Moscow but now lives in Hamburg and represents Germany – controlled the match from the start to score an emphatic 6-4 6-2 success.

But the home fans did not have things all their own way as German fifth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber was the latest victim of Polish qualifier Lucasz Kubot, who was an impressive 6-2 6-4 victor.

Second seed Nikolay Davydenko had too much for wild card Michael Berrer, one break in each set enough to record a 6-3 6-3 victory and move him into a last eight clash with Kubot.

In an all-German affair, veteran Nicolas Kiefer defeated Simon Greul 6-3 6-4.

There were also wins for Fabio Fognini and Jeremy Chardy, who hit back from losing the first set to beat Martin Vassallo Arguello.
