The number 15 seed, who reached the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park last year before losing to eventual champion Rafael Nadal, had been struggling with the complaint which first flared at the French Open last year.

Simon’s withdrawal has opened up the draw for world number one Roger Federer who was due to meet the 25-year-old in the fourth round.

The Frenchman was the highest seed Federer could have met before the quarter-finals.

Portugal’s Frederico Gil was due to play Simon in the first round on Tuesday.
