Novak Djokovic is the most successful player in Australian Open history.

Djokovic, a 10-time winner of the event, won 33 consecutive matches in Melbourne from 2019 to 2024. During this period, he won four Australian Open Men’s Singles titles.

Djokovic’s 33-match win streak at the event was ended in 2024 by Alexander Zverev, who defeated a physically hampered Djokovic in the semi-finals.

However, he is not the first player to record such a barnstorming streak at the Australian Open: an American superstar achieved the same feat in the 1990s.

That American star was Monica Seles, who was dominant at the event from the first moment she stepped onto court in Melbourne in 1991.

Monica Seles’ 33-match win streak at the Australian Open

Monica Seles, one of the greatest players of her generation, went unbeaten at the Australian Open over a period of eight years.

Seles, then 17, won the tournament on debut, defeating Czech star Jana Novotna in the 1991 final. She repeated the feat a year later, defeating Mary Joe Fernández in the final, 6–2, 6–3.

In 1993, the American made it three in a row, defeating 22-time Grand Slam champion Steffi Graf in the final.

She returned to the event in 1996, carrying on where she left off. Seles defeated Germany’s Anke Huber 6-4, 6-1 in the final.

Seles also missed the 1997 and 1998 events before returning once again in 1999. She reached the semi-finals, defeating Steffi Graf – who won the quadruple career Grand Slam during her career.

Her 33-match win streak was ended in the semi-finals by Swiss prodigy Martina Hingis.

Hingis, who had won the tournament in 1997 and 1998, defeated Seles 6-2, 6-4. Hingis then defeated Amelie Mauresmo in the final, capturing her third successive title in Australia.

When did Monica Seles retire?

Seles, a winner of nine Grand Slam titles, retired from her playing career in 2008, five years after playing her last professional match.

As per The New York Times, a statement released by Seles’ agent said: “I have for some time considered a return to professional play, but I have now decided not to pursue that.

“I will continue to play exhibitions, participate in charity events, promote the sport, but will no longer plan my schedule around the tour.”

Seles, a former world number one, won 53 WTA Tour-level singles titles during her career.
