Sharapova, who worked briefly with eight-time major winner Connors in 2008, split with previous trainer Thomas Hogstedt following her second-round defeat to Michelle Larcher de Brito at Wimbledon.

"I am happy to announce that Jimmy Connors will be my new coach,” the world No.2 said in a statement on her website.

“I have known Jimmy for many years and we briefly worked together in 2008 just before the Australian Open. I am really excited about our new partnership and looking forward to the upcoming tournaments."

"Excited to be working with four-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova,” tweeted Connors, who has previously coached Andy Roddick. “Adding to that number is the goal. Looking forward to some fun and hard work!"

Sharapova was scheduled to play at the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford next week, but withdrew with a left hip injury suffered during Wimbledon. She is expected to return to action at the Rogers Cup in Toronto in August.
