The former world number one ousted fifth seed Petrova 6-1 6-2 – her seventh win over her fellow Russian in eight meetings.

Elsewhere at Stanford, Australia’s Samantha Stosur reached the third round with a 6-1 7-5 defeat of Romania’s Monica Niculescu.
