The former world No.1, who lifted the trophy in New York 11 years ago, is currently struggling with a left forearm problem however it seems likely that the 30-year-old will be fit enough to make an appearance at the final major of the year.
The Russian last played in the city that never sleeps in 2014 – losing to Caroline Wozniacki in the last sixteen.
Sharapova has endured a stop-start comeback since returning to action in Stuttgart in April. The five-time Grand slam winner was forced to withdraw from Rome with a thigh-injury and her latest outing in Stanford ended after just one match.
The Russian pulled out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto and is also missing the event in Cincinnati this week. She will be joined in the main draw by Ashley Kratzer, Sofia Kenin, Brianne Minor, Kayla Day, Amandine Haase and Taylor Townsend, who have all been provided with wildcards.
