The Russian is unbeaten at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, having lifted the title on her two previous appearances in 2012 and 2013.

“I’ve competed here for the last two years and won both times, so I have only positive memories,” she said. “I don’t want to miss out on this experience.”

Sharapova, who beat Li Na in last year’s final, has not won a title since that victory on the clay in Germany, and has since slipped to No.9 in the world rankings after missing most of the second half of last season with a shoulder injury.

“At the moment, it’s a little hard for me to look at the world rankings, but it’s not a problem,” she admitted. “Because of my success at Grand Slams, I expect a lot of myself, but I have to be realistic and after an injury like that, you need time to get back to your best.”
