Serena Williams handed golden opportunity after the Wimbledon draw is made with potential Alex Eala clash looming

Serena Williams has officially learned her Wimbledon fate, as the draw was released earlier today.

It marks the most stunning of returns for the American tennis legend, who is set to play in both the singles and the doubles.

To think that we would ever be seeing both Williams sisters back on court in any capacity seems ludicrous to imagine, and yet here we are.

The only hope is that Serena Williams can remain competitive in what will be her first singles match in nearly four years.

A kind opening-round opponent certainly would have helped that, but heading into it as a wildcard, she was totally at the mercy of the draw. We now know who will have the pleasure of facing the 23-time Grand Slam champion in her first singles match back.

Serena Williams’ potential route to the Wimbledon final confirmed

The information that the tennis world has been waiting for has been released. Serena Williams’ first-round Wimbledon singles opponent will be Maya Joint.

This represents a huge opportunity for a first-round win for this legendary veteran, facing a player who has struggled for wins all throughout 2026.

If she is to bypass the Australian, then a meeting with one of Alexandra Eala or Renata Zarazua awaits.

Ironically, Eala recently played doubles with Venus Williams, with the two striking an instant connection.

Nobody really knows what to expect from the 44-year-old, but it’d be very surprising if she boasted the physicality to go all the way in this, her first singles tournament since 2022.

Her projected route from this stage would then likely be Iga Swiatek in the third round, Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round, Elina Svitolina or Marta Kostyuk in the quarter-finals, Amanda Anisimova or Elena Rybakina in the semi-finals and Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

In preparation for this event, Serena has been seen practising with the son of a tennis legend.

When did Serena Williams last win a Grand Slam title?

This Wimbledon actually marks the ten-year anniversary since the 44-year-old last lifted a major title, having done so at the All England Club in 2016.

There, she beat notable names like Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Angelique Kerber, dropping just one set en route to the title.

She also inflicted three 6-0 sets during this run too, highlighting her dominance over the draw that year.

This marked Serena’s seventh Wimbledon title and 23rd Grand Slam title.
