Serena Williams’ former coach predicts if Emma Raducanu will ever win another Grand Slam title

Emma Raducanu has not been close to repeating her Grand Slam title win in the past five years.

Raducanu won the US Open in 2021, becoming the first qualifier in history to win a major singles title.

The Briton has not added to her Grand Slam triumph since then, with Raducanu currently out due to a stress fracture in her lower right leg.

As Raducanu races to be fit for this year’s US Open, Serena Williams’ former coach, Rick Macci, has predicted if the 23-year-old can win another major title.

Rick Macci backs Emma Raducanu to become a top 10 player

Raducanu recently re-hired Andrew Richardson as her coach, having been criticised for splitting with her compatriot after he helped her win the US Open in 2021.

Macci was one of those to question this decision, but he has still praised Raducanu for her level of talent, which he claimed is good enough to make her a top 10 player.

“I’ve always been a big fan of Emma,” Macci told Tennis365. “Listen, when you have that amount of talent, and you do what she did at the US Open by never dropping a set, and qualifying and winning a Slam, the talent doesn’t go away.

“What goes away is the confidence, and maybe a little bit of the fitness. So, she still has the talent and the ability. Now, mentally, is it the most important thing [for Raducanu], ’til your last breath? I don’t know because I’m not in that circle.

“But she has the talent, and when she plays on grass, she kind of reacts and is a little more authoritative. At the end of the day, I think it’s great what she did, getting to the finals [at Queen’s Club].

“She’s definitely a top 10 player, there’s no doubt about it, if you go talent-wise. But talent doesn’t get you into the top 10. It’s how you compete every match — that’s the key.

“She’s just been a little bit too up and down. But it’s only over when you quit, and hopefully she’s going to keep on grinding.”

Macci was then asked if he thinks Raducanu is good enough to win another Grand Slam, to which he suggested that she was due to the depth in women’s tennis right now.

“Absolutely,” responded Macci. “Women’s tennis nowadays, it’s so fluid. Anybody can beat anybody. She has the game, that’s the first thing — you’ve gotta have the game. She has enough firepower, and she can defend pretty good at times. It’s just the competitiveness to die for every point.

“But absolutely, she can be back in the top 10 and she can contend for Grand Slams. I have no doubt. But that’s between her and her. I’m sure she’s trying her best.”

Emma Raducanu’s Grand Slam results since winning the 2021 US Open

Since winning the US Open in 2021, Raducanu has appeared in 14 Grand Slam main draws, having missed five majors during this time, four of which were due to injury.

Raducanu’s best Grand Slam result during this time came at Wimbledon in 2024, where she reached the fourth round.

The world number 37 has also suffered three first round defeats at Grand Slams, two of which have actually come at the US Open for Raducanu.

Raducanu missed Wimbledon due to her leg injury and she now faces a race against time to be fit for the US Open.

However, the signs are not positive for Raducanu, who is not entered into either the Canadian Open or the Cincinnati Open.
