The world number one is chasing her fifth title at Melbourne Park, and on the evidence of this display looks on track.

Williams dropped just three points on her first serve for the whole match, while she also managed to win more than half of the points on Kvitova’s service en route to a 6-2 6-1 triumph.

The Czech was simply outgunned by Williams, who will meet a seed for the first time in the next round when she plays Carla Suarez Navarro.

The Spanish 32nd seed has also won her opening two matches in straight sets, defeating Andrea Petkovic 6-1 6-4 to reach the third round.
