Spaniard Medina Garrigues, who lost in the final in Fes to Gisela Dulko 12 months ago, dropped only two games in defeating Camille Pin 6-1 6-1.

Russian Kleybanova, the second seed, encountered slightly more resistance but still breezed past qualifier Corinna Dentoni 6-2 6-4.

Third seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was also an easier winner, the Russian coming through 6-1 6-2 against Galina Voskoboeva.

Fifth seed Sorana Cirstea did not fare as well, however, the Romanian going down 6-3 6-4 to Lourdes Dominguez Lino.

Klara Zakopalova will face the top seed in the second round after beating Urszula Radwanska 7-5 6-2 while Slovakia’s Jarmila Groth defeated Paula Fondevila Castro to set up a meeting with Kleybanova.

Seventh seed Roberta Vinci was a 2-6 6-4 6-1 winner over Mariana Duque Marino while Shahar Peer, seeded eighth, also needed three sets to see off Aravane Rezai 6-4 2-6 6-4.

Melinda Czink, Anne Keothavong, Polona Hercog, Eva Fernandez-Brugues, Lucie Hradecka and Akiko Morigami also made it through to round two.
