Wayne Odesnik of the United States upset Austrian Melzer 6-4 6-0, with the third seed falling apart towards the end of the opening set.

He won just two points in the final three games, losing his serve without winning a point in the ninth game before Odesnik served a love game in the 10th that included a service winner and an ace to end the first set.

He then picked up a racket-abuse warning in the second set, as he destroyed his racket out of frustration while failing to win a game.

Fourth-seeded Jeremy Chardy of France suffered an even heavier defeat at the hands of Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, winning just the one game en route to a 6-1 6-0 defeat.

In the first round top two seeds James Blake and Mardy Fish were sent packing as three other seeds were sent crashing out in the first two days of the tournament.

Elsewhere, Lleyton Hewitt breezed to a 6-1 6-3 triumph over Sergio Roitman, while American John Isner came from a set down to edge past Chile’s Paul Capdeville 4-6 7-6 (7/1) 7-6 (7/5).
