Safarova came through a hard-fought contest to win 7-5 6-2 after 85 minutes and will face Israel’s Shahar Peer in the quarter-finals.

Sixth seed Peer beat Karolina Sprem 6-4 6-3 while Hungary’s Agnes Szavay beat Croatian wild card Petra Martic 6-2 6-4.

World number 82 Martic had caused the shock of the tournament so far yesterday by beating third seed Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium.

Fifth seed Aravane Rezai was unable to give the home crowd something to cheer as she lost out in three sets to Germany’s Andrea Petkovic.

Rezai put up a fight after trailing 5-0 in the decider but Petkovic eventually sealed a 6-3 3-6 6-3 victory.
