Pennetta came into this clash on a 14-match winning streak having triumphed in Palermo and Los Angeles, but Safina tore her apart to win in 56 minutes.

Safina’s serve was hugely effective, with the Russian getting in 71% of first serves and winning 79% of the subsequent points.

The victory took Safina through to her eighth tour final of the year.

Safina will take on fifth seed Jelena Jankovic, who won an epic semi-final against Elena Dementieva on Saturday night.

The Serbian prevailed 7-6 (7/2) 0-6 7-6 (8/6) in a match lasting two hours and 46 minutes.

Jankovic will now go in search of her second title of 2009 after her only previous success came in Marbella in April.
