The Russian world number two recorded six double faults but was otherwise dominant on service to advance to a quarter-final meeting with American Jill Craybas, who beat Nicole Vaidisova 6-4 6-3.

Safina had to survive three set points while serving at 4-5 in the first but will be boosted in the knowledge she holds a 4-0 record over Craybas.

Fourth seed Vera Zvonareva cruised to a 6-3 6-1 win over Pauline Parmentier in under an hour but ninth seed Carolina Wozniacki needed three sets to see off Estonian world number 21 Kaia Kanepi.

The Danish world number 13 eventually came through the two hour contest 6-3 3-6 6-3 and the 18-year-old will face Urszula Radwanska for a place semi-finals after the Polish wildcard beat Alexa Glatch 6-3 7-6 (7/3).

Eighth seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus recorded a 6-3 7-5 triumph over Russian Elena Vesnina, while China’s Li Na breezed into a last eight meeting with Zvonareva with a 7-5 6-2 win over Amelie Mauresmo.

Israel’s Shahar Peer followed up her second-round win over Monterrey Open champion Marion Bartoli as she needed just 80 minutes to down Anna Chakvetadze 6-2 6-4.

Peer converted seven breaks of the world number 24’s serve to record just the second win of her career over the Russian.
