Murray will become the highest-ranked British player of the open era when he rises to third with the publication of new ratings next week. That will take the 21-year-old past the highest of fourth achieved by both Rusedski and Tim Henman.
Rusedski told PA Sport: “He is definitely good enough to win a grand slam and get to world number one, although Rafael Nadal will have a lot to say about that unfortunately.”
He added: “The next year will be critical for him to get over the hurdle of winning that first major.
“If he wins one I think there could be many more to come.”
Murray, who has 11 tournament wins to his name, will once again carry the weight of British expectation when Wimbledon starts next month.
But Rusedski does not believe Murray will have a problem dealing with that burden and expects him to be among the title contenders.
Rusedski added: “He is in good shape and if he continues to perform as he has this year he has a good chance to win Wimbledon. It is a personal dream now to win a major championship.
“He should do fantastically well if he is healthy, he can handle the pressure.
“I can see him getting to the semis, if not further.”
