Roger Federer may be unseeded for the Australian Open, with analyst warning ‘that could mean trouble’

Roger Federer could be unseeded for the Australian Open in 2021 and that could ‘mean trouble,’ says Brad Gilbert.

Federer has barely played since the 2020 Australian Open due to undergoing double knee surgery, as well as the enforced coronavirus break.

But while tennis is due to return in August before staging both the US Open and French Open in September, Roger Federer won’t be back in action until next year.

He has vowed to do all he can to come back, despite being set to turn 39 next month, but Gilbert believes he may be giving himself a mountain to climb.

ā€œThirty-nine ainā€™t what it used to be, thatā€™s for sure,ā€ says former tennis coach turned TV analyst Gilbert.

ā€œBut if tennis gets going again, heā€™ll probably be unseeded for the Australian Open in ā€™21 because he played so little early this year. And that could mean trouble.ā€

Federer went all the way to the semi-finals of the Australian Open this year but was severely hampered by injury in his final two matches.
