Earlier in the day, third seed James Blake beat Florent Serra of France 6-4 6-3 and will next face sixth-seeded countryman Sam Querrey, who overcame Denis Gremelmayr of Germany 6-3 6-2 in 53 minutes.

Fifth seed Mardy Fish advanced with a 6-2 6-7 (5/7) 7-5 win over Jon Isner in a battle of the big servers, while qualifier Todd Widom defeated Taylor Dent 6-7 (5/7) 6-3 6-2.
