Robson beaten in final

An out-of-sorts Robson struggled against the tall Czech’s big serve as she was beaten 6-1 7-6 (7/5) in one hour 20 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.

Pliskova fired down 13 aces while Robson, who was also beaten in last year’s final, contributed to her own demise with 31 unforced errors, including a double fault to hand her rival the match.

Robson, 16, had beaten Pliskova’s twin sister Kristyna to reach her second consecutive final at Melbourne Park following an impressive run that had seen her drop just one set.

But the young Briton was behind after just 22 minutes as Pliskova raced through the opening set and served it out with an ace.

Pliskova broke in the first game of the second set as the Melbourne-born left-hander’s frustrations grew despite the support of the sparse crowd at centre court.

Robson bravely fought back to grab her first break when Pliskova served for the match and take the set to a tie-break.

Robson surged 4-1 ahead in the tie-break but a pair of double faults proved costly.
