Repeat injury leaves Ons Jabeur in doubt for major achievement

Ons Jabeur has withdrawn from the Courmayeur ladies open after suffering another elbow injury.

Jabeur has suffered the same injury that forced her to withdraw during her match against Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Moscow Open earlier this month.

Tunisian number one Jabeur currently occupies the final qualifying position for the WTA Finals, 9th in the WTA rankings since Ashleigh Barty has already withdrawn.

As the season enters its closing stages and the race to qualify for the WTA Finals in Guadalajara heats up, Estonian number one Anett Kontaveit now has a golden opportunity to secure the final qualifying position.

The Tunisian currently sits 139 points ahead of 10th ranked Kontaveit in the WTA points total, but with Kontaveit competing in the Transylvania Open this week, and being the number two seed, the Estonian has the possibility to overtake and qualify ahead of Jabeur.

Although, overtaking Jabeur would be a tough challenge as Kontaveit would have to reach the final to earn enough points to qualify ahead of Jabeur. Reaching the final would earn Kontaveit 180 points, whereas reaching the semi-final would only earn her 110 points.

Despite this, Jabeur seemed to be in good spirits despite her injury, giving Kontaveit some light-heated banter over Instagram:
