Frenchwoman Razzano, seeded seventh at her home event, had no answer to her Swiss opponent who posted a 6-3 7-6 (7/3) victory to open her 2010 account on a successful note at the indoor hard-court event.

There were no such concerns for fourth-seeded Francesca Schiavone, who posted a ‘double bagel’ 6-0 6-0 win over Russian qualifier Vesna Manasieva.

Israel’s Shahar Peer, the sixth seed, also advanced to round two courtesy of a 6-4 6-1 triumph over Alize Cornet of France.

Croatia’s Karolina Sprem was a 7-5 6-1 winner against Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky, while Tathiana Garbin of Italy overcame Romanian qualifier Ioana Raluca Olaru 3-6 6-2 6-4.

Elsewhere today there were wins for Melanie Oudin, Lucie Safarova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Andrea Petkovic.

Elena Dementieva, the top seed from Russia, and second-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy have byes into round two.
