Raonic out of ATP World Tour Finals

The Canadian announced on Thursday afternoon that he would not be able to take to the court for his final Group B match against Kei Nishikori after sustaining the injury during his round-robin defeat to Andy Murray on Tuesday.

“I am sad to announce that I have to withdraw from the rest of this competition due to a low grade tear in my quad. It was a hard decision,” Raonic announced on Twitter. “You, the fans deserve a great show and I wouldn’t step out if I couldn’t. I am sorry for the fans. I will do everything to be here next year.”

First alternate David Ferrer steps in to play Nishikori, who will all but guarantee his place in the semi-finals with victory over the Spaniard.

Raonic’s withdrawal means Andy Murray must beat Roger Federer on Thursday to be in with a chance of reaching the last four. If Ferrer beats Nishikori and Murray beats Federer, the Scot will finish Group A on top and avoid the winner of Group B, likely to be Novak Djokovic, in the semi-finals.
