In a move to encourage the world’s best players to compete at the London 2012 Olympics, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced that ranking points will be awarded to female players participating in the Games.

London will now be the third successive Olympics where this is the case for women, while the ATP and ITF are still negotiating whether ranking points will be on offer for the men.

“More top women will be eligible to compete in London, which is good,” said ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti.

The entry criteria for the Games has also changed, with the ITF now allowing four singles players from each country and a maximum of two doubles pairs per country to compete.
