Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Serena Williams answer bushfire charity event call
Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams have all been confirmed for the Rally for Relief event to support victims of the Australian bushfires.
Nick Kyrgios called for tennis to help the cause, and Tennis Australia has answered the call, as have some of the biggest names in the sport.
The event will take place on January 15 at Rod Laver Arena, with further details to be announced later.
Nadal and Williams are already in Australasia playing tournaments, with Federer set to join them later this week.
“This unprecedented bushfire crisis is devastating people, properties, communities, livestock and animals across the country and our hearts go out to all those affected,” said Tennis Australia chief executive and Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley.
“We felt it was vital we use all our events across the summer to make a meaningful contribution to help these people and communities rebuild their lives.
“The response from the tennis community – our players, clubs, partners and international tennis bodies – has been overwhelming and it’s wonderful to see everyone pull together.
“The world’s top players, boasting many grand slam titles between them, have committed to AO Rally for Relief and we look forward to announcing the line-up in the coming days.
“The players are keen to be involved – we’ve had a tremendous response from them and they are keen to help.
“AO Rally for Relief promises to be an incredible night of tennis and entertainment, as well as a wonderful opportunity to bring together the best of our sport for this important cause.”
Tennis has already been active in its support for the cause, with 100$AU donated for every ace served at the ATP Cup, Maria Sharapova and Novak Djokovic each donating $25,000, and Simona Halep pledging $200 for every time she rants at her Australian coach Darren Cahill.
