Rafael Nadal celebrates during Australian Open final

Rafael Nadal hails ‘impossible’ victory after maintaining perfect start to the season

Rafael Nadal says him winning a tournament like Acapulco would have looked ‘impossible’ just a few weeks ago.

Nadal continued his perfect start to the season by defeating Cam Norrie in the final to go 15-0 this season.

The Spaniard had to finish his 2021 season early due to a long-standing foot injury, and he started the year with, by his own admission, reduced expectations.

However, he has looked as good as ever, and that seems to have surprised Rafael Nadal as much as anyone.

“[Acapulco] is a tournament that started with five of the top six players in the world,” the 35-year-old said.

“It was complicated, and I ended up taking the victory. Looking back, a few weeks ago this would have looked impossible.

“It’s amazing how things can change in such a short span, from not being able to practice and now to be where I am today.”

The win continues a the remarkable renaissance for Nadal this season, who will always inevitably be compared statistically to Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

He, though, is maintaining his long standing attitude towards comparisons.

“At the end of the day I’ve always said that this kind of records needs to be measured once your career is over,” Nadal said.

“Today the most important thing is that I have won a prestigious tournament.”
