Quote Machine: No 3 Andy Roddick

Andy Roddick is one of those sports personalities who actually has a personality.

The likeable Texan is as much a draw for his world’s-fastest serve as his sharp-shooting comments in post-match press conference. And being a good looking lad with a great-looking girlfriend only adds to the appeal.

With the US Open starting on Monday, we’ll be keeping an eye on how Roddick fares – after all, he turned down a spot in the US Olympic squad to focus on his bid for a second Slam.

But win, lose, or draw, one thing’s for sure – the self-professed “quote machine” will keep it entertaining. See for yourself, or check out our favourites.

A-Rod’s top ten

“Rod-dick…I had years of psychological issues with that.”

Answering the question ‘What letter in the English language sounds like a female sheep’ on the British Weakest Link: “Baah?”

Calling out to firefighters rescuing Roddick and other hotel guests from a fire in Rome: “Hey, you guys with the ladder – if you come here I’ll buy you pizza.”

On whether he would be going sleeveless any time soon: “No, if I wore a sleeveless shirt, people would try to feed me after the match. If you got the guns, go for it. I got two breadsticks sticking out of my sleeve. I’ll stick with sleeves.”

On his chances at last year’s US Open: “As good as anybody not named Roger.”

After losing in the first round at the 2006 French Open: “Whatever I said last year, just copy it. I’m sure it still fits.”

On the jump from the challenger circuit to the ATP: “I used to like hit for a half hour and then go eat Cheetos the rest of the day, come out and drill forehands. Now I’m really trying to make it happen, being professional, really going for it, and I miss my Cheetos.”

On equaling former coach coach Brad Gilbert’s career best on his way to the world No.1 spot: “I was happy to get to 4 because Brad, that was what he had on me – ‘Yeah, yeah, I was 4 in the world, you’re only 5.’ So he’s lost that line this week.”

“I think the most gratifying part was seeing him vomit after he sky dived.” – what does Gilbert do to these guys?

On the new courts at the 2006 Australian Open: “They got lines and everything. I like them. They’re good”

When taking a live phone-call on ESPN and told “…you suck and you will never win a major again so what do you have to say about that?”: “Neither will you.”
